Product Marketing Manager sample task

Interviews tell you one half of the story, tasks put all that talk into action to ensure the candidate lives up to your expectations. Here's a sample task - feel free to use it as-is, tweak it, or just draw some inspiration from it.


The Product team has asked you to help them define a strategy for guest (non-member) job seekers. Guest job seekers come to the website to find their next opportunity. When they attempt to apply to a job on the site, they are first required to register and create a profile. Focusing on this audience, please develop a perspective on the questions below and come prepared to share and discuss with a group of product marketers.

Key questions:

  1. How would you define a guest job seekers’ top needs, pain points, and requirements in this situation?
  2. Outline at least 2 recommendations describing product changes that would meaningfully address the pain points you described above. How did you reach these ideas?
  3. Outline the high-level research plan you’d use to test, validate and prioritize your ideas, including rationale, key questions, tools/tactics and deliverables for your approach.
  4. Assume research proves out your ideas - How would you get Product team’s buy-in?
  5. Develop positioning and key messaging for your recommended improvements.
  6. How would you measure the success of your recommendation?
